Adolf BORN

Adolf Born was born on 12 June in 1930 in the town of Ceske Velenice on the Czech-Austrian border. In 1935 the family moved to Prague.
During 1950-55 he studied at the school of Applied Art in Prague Department of Caricature and Newspaper Drawing, headed by Prof. A. Pelc.
He first became known to the public as a cartoonist. He published his humorous drawings in all the important magazines and participated in group exhibitions and caricature exhibitions, from some of which he brought back prestigious awards. In 1974 he was proclaimed “The Cartoonist of the Year” in Montreal, Canada.
After censorship prohibited the publishing of his cartoons in 1973, he devoted more of his time to animated films, book illustrations and graphics. He merged graphics with cartoons and so he arrived at a new artistic expression. His cosmopolitan humour, his selection of topics rooted in the history of his country (Austro-Hungarian monarchy or the Rudolfinian period) and finally his special world of animals make him famous all over the world.

Adolf Born wurde am 12.Juni 1930 in Ceske Velenice an der tschechisch -österreichischen Grenze geboren. 1935 zog er mit seiner Familie nach Prag.
1950 –55 besuchte er in Prag die Kunstgewerbeschule, Abteilung Karikatur und Zeitungszeichnung unter der Leitung von Prof. A. Pelc.
Adolf Born wurde zuerst als Cartoonist bekannt. Er veröffentlichte seine humorvollen Zeichnungen in allen grossen und wichtigen Zeitungen und Magazinen, er nahm teil an Gruppenausstellungen, von vielen brachte er wertvolle Auszeichnungen mit nach Hause. So wurde er 1974 in Montreal Cartoonist des Jahres. Nachdem die Zensur in 1973 seine Cartoons verboten hatte, widmete er sich mehr dem animierten Film, der Buchillustration und der Graphik. Er verband Graphik mit Cartoons und erreichte so einen neuen künstlerischen Ausdruck. Sein kosmopolitischer Humor, die Wahl seiner Themen, die in der Geschichte seines Landes verwurzelt sind (z.B. die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie oder das Rudolfinische Zeitalter) und schliesslich seine spezielle Welt der Tiere machten ihn berühmt in der ganzen Welt.
