Oldrich KULHANEK

Oldrich Kulhanek was born on 26. February 1940 in Prague. Between 1958-64 he studied at the College of Applied Art in Prague in the studio of Prof. Svolinsky. In 1971, Kulhanek was arrested by StB (Czech KGB) and accused of the defamation of representatives of communist countries in his graphic sheets from years 1968-71. Namely, it was the face of Stalin used in his graphic art. The 70s were thus marked by a total ban of exhibitions. Nevertheless he continued to work. His work found its way into the world illegally. For instance, Kulhanek took part in the “Homage à A . Dürer” exhibition in Nürnberg in 1971, under the pseudonym of Ulrich Böhm. In 1990, Kulhanek visited the USA for the first time to take part in the Lithographic Workshop in Los Angeles. Since then he has been to the States many times. In 1995 f. i. he was a guest lecturer at the University of Houston-Clear Lake in Texas. Between 1992 and 1993, Kulhanek was engaged in the new Czech bank notes project. Since 1990 he has exhibited his work all over the world.

Oldrich Kulhanek ist am 26. Februar 1940 in Prag geboren. Von 1958 – 64 studierte er an der Prager Kunstgewerbeschule bei Prof. Svolinsky. 1971 wurde er von der StB ( tschechische Geheimpolizei ) ins Gefängnis gesperrt und beschuldigt mit seinem grafischen Werk führende Persönlichkeiten der befreundeten kommunistischen Staaten zu verunglimpfen, ( namentlich war es das Antlitz Stalins, welches in seiner Grafik erschien ). Die 70 er Jahre standen für Kulhanek im Zeichen vom totalen Ausstellungsverbot. Trotzdem hörte er nicht auf zu arbeiten. Sein Werk fand einen illegalen Weg in die Welt, z.B. nahm er im Jahre 1971 an der Ausstellung „ Hommage an A. Dürer“ in Nürnberg unter dem Pseudonym Ulrich Böhm, teil. In 1990 besuchte er zum erstenmal die USA und nahm teil am „Lithographie Workshop“ in Los Angeles. Seitdem besuchte er die USA mehrmals. In 1995 z.B. war Kulhanek als Gastdozent an der Universität Houston - Clear Lake in Texas. Von 1992 – 93 arbeitete er an den Projekt für neue Tschechische Banknoten. Seit 1990 zeigte er sein Werk in vielen Ausstellungen überall auf der Welt.
